Living color

Candy Factory, originally uploaded by Goggla.
What attracts certain people to certain places? This particular building attracts graffiti artists in droves. Their work, in turn, attracts the likes of me. As I took this pic, a woman walked by, saw me shooting and decided she'd like to take a pic, too. Maybe her shot will end up on a wall somewhere as the focal point of an exhibition on urban evolution. In the mean time, I revisit the wall, which is different every day, and wait for the answer.

Aftershock

A big Thank You to everyone who came out to the grand opening of the Hester Street Fair this last weekend.  The first day saw a jaw-dropping 11,000 visitors!  Sunday was rainy and cold, but we still had a great time and met so many friendly and interesting people from the neighborhood.

GQ has a nice write-up here:  http://www.gq.com/style/blogs/the-gq-eye/2010/04/check-this-out-hester-street-fair.html

Eye in the sky

Welcome to my nightmare

I take a photo of something I like in a window. I go home and enlarge the photo, only to see that instead of the object of my affection, there is a reflection of the photographer in its place. To my horror, another camera eye gazes on the scene, only it's not mine...backwards and behind me on the street, he shoots, he snaps, he retreats. Where has he taken my image? Is he at home now looking back at me through the eye that I gaze through now? Blink, blink, blink. Frame it, capture it, hang the trophy on the wall.

PEDAL POWER 2010

I had a request from the East Village Community Coalition to post this upcoming event:

Pedal Power 2010 - Kids' Art Bike Parade

When: Saturday, May 8
10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Where: Tompkins Square Park

The East Village Community Coalition is hosting the third annual Kids' Art Bike Parade on Saturday, May 8. It is a celebration of the arts, bicycling and sustainable street design. In addition to riding in the Parade, folks may transform their bicycles into mobile works of art, join the Learn-to-Ride Class (begins at 10:00 a.m.), take advantage of free bicycle tune-ups and benefit from free helmet fittings and giveaways.

Additionally, there will be live entertainment in Tompkins Square before the Parade, and Rude Mechanical Orchestra will welcome Parade participants back into the Park before the free raffle and post-ride refreshments.

Parade co-sponsors include Transportation Alternatives, Recycle-A-Bicycle, the Lower East Side Peoples' Mutual Housing Association, Bike New York and the NYC Department of Transportation. For more information, and to register for this FREE event, call 212.979.2344 or e-mail lesbikeparade [at] gmail [dot] com

Talk to me cuz I'm lonely

Talk to me cuz I'm lonely, originally uploaded by Goggla.
It's amazing how in a city of 8 million, there can be so many who feel alone. At the same time, it's difficult to find places to actually be alone. I can be out swimming through the crowds for an entire day without speaking to a single soul. If no one is there to share the experience, did it really happen?

Meanwhile, somewhere upstairs, a man I've never met sings a song about gettin' no satisfaction.

It's all smooth sailing from here

North Cove, originally uploaded by Goggla.
Technically, spring began last week, but due to the last 40 days of rain and dreariness, we'll just pretend it starts today. Time to unfurl those sails, raise the anchor and hit the harbor like Sinbad off to conquer the Eye of the Tiger.
