In business since 1934, we are the Oldest Bar & Grill on the Coney Island Boardwalk. Famously located directly on the boardwalk with the Atlantic Ocean as our front yard.
RUBY'S is family owned and operated. We are the only full service bar & grill on the boardwalk with indoor seating. RUBY'S was Voted the 14th sexiest beach bar in the world by the TRAVEL CHANNEL. Other awards include best Dive bar in Brooklyn 1999, 2002, 2005, and best jukebox on the boardwalk 40 years running.
For more background on the sad situation, see Jeremiah's Vanishing New York.
Amusing the Zillion also has a good post here.
I can't find my photos of Ruby's at the moment, but this is how I like to remember Coney in all its unrepentant crudeness:
thanks for your recent comments re my mom's passing. God Bless
ReplyDeleteI've signed the petition, but I hate to say this, I doubt it will do any good. The corporate screwheads already have the wheels in motion to turn it into a shiny, scrubbed up walk of shame for tourists and people that just don't know any better. The Coney Island boardwalk was one of the first places I went to when I moved here in 1993 and in 1996 a friend of mine was a bartender at the Freak Show Bar and I spent almost every Sunday out there that summer and got to know a lot of the Coney Island people. By closing Ruby's, Cha Cha's, Shoot the Freak and the other places they are literally removing the heart and soul of the boardwalk. I'll never go back and it really makes me feel sad. At least I have memories and photos, I pity those that missed this special place. It'll never come back.
ReplyDeleteGreat shot!! One day I will return to Brooklyn and shoot some stuff.
ReplyDeleteWord is Ruby's plans to be open this Saturday (Nov 13) since so many people turned out to show support this last weekend. The eviction notice is for the 15th, so there's still hope...and if the eviction moves forward, Ruby's and the other boardwalk businesses involved are ready to take Zamperla to court.
ReplyDeleteIt's not over yet!
