I've been avoiding this block, but walked along it the other day, from Bowery to 2nd Avenue. There's a Chase Bank at one end, an incoming TD Bank at the other, and Mall of America in between. There's absolutely nothing that indicates you're in NYC...not even Veselka could bring any personality to this swath of nothingness.
I took this weird video on the night of the closing. If you look quick at the 37 second mark, you can see Bob sitting on a flower pot: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RWF_QcfB40
Does 'wiped off the face of the earth', 'removed all semblance of', 'you'd never know what once stood here,' mean anything to you? Might as well be in Toronto.
Which is why, when they want to film a story set in NYC and don't need to show landmarks beyond a few establishing shots, they do it in T.O., and have done so for thirty or more years, because it's cheaper. You're being a bit Manhattancentric. T.O. looks like outer-borough NYC. If you're going to dump on T.O., dump on the outer boroughs too, while you're at it.
I don't understand why new buildings need to look so ugly. Why can't they build in the style of the neighborhood? Do rich people really prefer that steel-and-glass look?
oh look away look away......
ReplyDeleteThat is such a sad, generic look. Could be anytown.
ReplyDeleteoh my, shipping crates?

ReplyDeleteMemories of the Mars Bar is all. Is there anything else that's left?
