Escape from New York - Part 2
I'm fascinated by fire escapes. For those of us living in cramped apartments without a terrace or yard, they provide the luxury of fresh air, sunshine and a bit of peace. We can imagine ourselves alone, free from the stress within.
And, they're useful.
Fire escapes are a great place to read the paper...
Listen to music...
Catch up on emails...
Just remember to close the window after returning inside. Danger is everywhere...
Well caught! Yes, wonderful perches, and some of the older ones so elaborate. I love to see a whole row of them together, and the shadows they cast on their buildings.
That always works as my poor man's terrace. I love to read out on the fire escape. Except for the tourists who try to take my photo. I hide behind my book for those.
Speaking of tourists, a tourist once asked me (upon observing a fashion shoot on a fire escape), whether New Yorkers really have to use those stairs to get to their apartments.
