This last weekend, we celebrated our 14th Mulchfest anniversary. The NYC Parks Department and Department of Sanitation have been tree-cycling for longer than that, but we didn't start documenting it until 2009.
Last year, we participated in Mulchfest events in both Tompkins Square Park in the East Village (Manhattan) and Maria Hernandez Park in Bushwick (Brooklyn). This year, we focused on Maria Hernandez Park, where people were excited to bring their discarded Christmas trees, even going so far as to bring lawn chairs so they could sit back and enjoy the wood chipper in action.
Once the chipper got going, the scent of evergreen was wonderfully overwhelming.

As the pile of trees shrunk, the pile of fresh mulch grew.
Bags were provided so people could take home as much mulch as they wanted.
Thank you to the NYC Parks Department and the Department of Sanitation for another successful year of holiday tree-cycling.
