Escape from New York - Part 2

I'm fascinated by fire escapes.  For those of us living in cramped apartments without a terrace or yard, they provide the luxury of fresh air, sunshine and a bit of peace.  We can imagine ourselves alone, free from the stress within.

And, they're useful.

Fire escapes are a great place to read the paper...

  1. Well caught! Yes, wonderful perches, and some of the older ones so elaborate. I love to see a whole row of them together, and the shadows they cast on their buildings.

  2. That always works as my poor man's terrace. I love to read out on the fire escape. Except for the tourists who try to take my photo. I hide behind my book for those.

  3. Speaking of tourists, a tourist once asked me (upon observing a fashion shoot on a fire escape), whether New Yorkers really have to use those stairs to get to their apartments.
