This past Wednesday, East Village Grocery employee, Akkas Ali, was severely injured by a drunk driver racing down 2nd Avenue. Now there is a crowd-sourcing campaign on to help raise money to cover Ali's medical bills.

A celebration of pigeons
I see this flock of pigeons every day, circling over the intersection of 6th Avenue and Watts Street.
They are mostly white and, when flying in the sun, their wings look almost transparent.
As I've been seeing them often for so long, I like to think they recognize me...
Here's the flock in action last summer:

A summery surprise on 6th Street
Each time I walk past the vacant lot on the north side of E 6th Street, just east of 1st Avenue, I fantasize about building a little log cabin in this fairy wood.
On this day of torrential rain, the ground cover is lush and green. But, there's something more going on here...look closer.
Strawberries!
I've seen them here and there in the community gardens, but never in an unattended space like this. And the lot is filled with them.
The birds and mice will have a field day.

Sunday fun in Tompkins Square
The Damn Broads played as part of A Witches' Night Out, an all-female punk extravaganza.
You can't have a punk show without at least one mohawk:
And punk fashion:
Then, there was this, a man and his chinchillas...

Howl!
It was a busy weekend of art, music, dancing and entertainment at the annual Howl! Festival in Tompkins Square Park.
Some showed their creativity with costumes...
I'm always impressed by the level of talent on show at Art Around the Park. Here, Chico gets started on portraits of Allen Ginsburg and Taylor Mead.
And there was a lot of colorful singing and dancing...
See many, many more photos of the weekend festivities here.
