On the first day of November, we found resident East Village red-tailed hawk, Amelia, perched on the cross of St Nicholas of Myra church at sunrise.
As the sun rose above the tree tops in Tompkins Square Park, Amelia took to the sky.
She banked to the east and disappeared over the park.
Landing gear up!
A few minutes later, she returned with her mate, Christo, and they perched together on the church cross. In the photo below, Amelia is on the top, while Christo sits to the right.
Something caught Amelia's attention and she took off again.
This time, she flew straight down Avenue A and did not return.
As we enter November, the leaves turn color, the sun casts a golden light over everything, and the hawks become active defending their territory against other raptors.
It's our favorite time of year.
