Saying goodbye to Ruby's

It's been almost a year since the previous "last" day of Ruby's at Coney Island and, as far as I know, there is still a chance they may be back.  But, at their closing party yesterday, I had it in my mind to say goodbye to the Ruby's I've always known.

I haven't prepared my pictures yet, so here are some videos.  The first shows the iconic photographs being taken down...

Here is a clip with "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" playing on the jukebox.  If Elton were here, I'm sure he'd agree...

And, this one really breaks my heart.  A couple dances to Frank Sinatra's "The Summer Wind"...this is how I'll always remember Ruby's.

  1. Wow, that last video is a heartbreaker for sure! Can't wait to see your photos, sorry we didn't get to hang out there yesterday. I arrived later and it was freezing in there!

  2. @Marty - I'm sorry to have missed you!

The setting sun, picture removal and sad songs were almost too much. I feel we've been saying goodbye for over a year now and I really want to be optimistic that the Coney Island Eight will return next season, but even if they do, they will likely not be as we know and love them.

The dancing in Ruby's has always been my favorite boardwalk experience. I can't think of another place full of so much happiness, nostalgia, fun and camaraderie. Each time I was here, I never had to worry about tomorrow.

  4. All those videos are really sad. The taking down of the pictures is just awful to look at. Thanks for such a beautiful record of it all, though. (And I love how the man-with-sea-creature makes it in there for a bit of comic relief.)

  5. @Lindsay - I'm sorry to have missed you on Sunday. Let's hope we'll be able to met up at Ruby's next year!

@onemorefoldedsunset - it was great to see you (and the mysterious sea creature)...only in Coney. ;)
