Because this never gets old

I can't get enough of the Tompkins Square Park hawks.  Chasing them around has become one of my favorite pastimes and, this last weekend, I finally got to see one of them up close when it sat on a fence and stared into my soul...

Check out those talons!

The hawk spent a lot of time on the ground, digging around, looking for prey under the shrubs.  Its feathers blend in beautifully with the foliage and snow.

Here's a little video of the hawk going after something on the ground.  As always, apologies for the camerawork.  Some day, I'll get it right...

Fabulous, especially that first photograph. I worked with a falconer one summer - my best job ever. I recommend The Goshawk, by T.H.White (Sword in the Stone) - wild, wild souls!

  4. A half second later, he flew directly at my face. All I saw was that beak headed for my eye...

  5. There is a segment of the video where it's obvious I can't see the bird and he almost slips out of frame. Sigh...
