We still have at least one of the Tompkins Square red-tailed hawk fledglings hanging around the park.
As we push into August, the young hawks are getting harder to track as they each embark on their own adventures, so it's great to be able to still see some activity within the park.
This fledgling seemed to enjoy itself one morning as it flew back and forth across the skateboard area in the NW quadrant of the park.
All three of the fledglings this year have appeared consistently healthy and strong.
This one gives us a good look at all its beautiful feathers.
On these recent sweltering afternoons, it's been difficult to track the birds as they quietly shelter from the heat in the leaves of the trees. I just happened to look in the right place and spotted this one blending into some shady leaves.
The main lawn has been the focal point for the young hawks this year. It has been their favorite place to practice diving, swooping, chasing, and pouncing.
Looking good!
More to come...
