The Tompkins Square red-tailed hawk fledglings continue to expand their world as they explore the further reaches of the park as well as the surrounding streets.
Early one morning, one of the fledglings decided to climb around on the scaffolding that currently encases the park bathrooms.
It was quickly joined by a Blue Jay who loudly disapproved of the hawk's presence.
After harassing the hawk for several minutes, the Blue Jay took off.
Late on an evening earlier in the week, one of the other fledglings tried out the view from the scaffolding at The Earth School on Avenue B. A resident Mockingbird let let the hawk know it was not welcome.
Meanwhile, that same evening, another fledgling investigated a fire escape on E 8th Street.
After taking in the view of the street for a few minutes, the hawk took off and returned to the park.
Note the tail - this is the fledgling who has a missing/stunted tail feather on its left side, making it easy to identify this individual.
By morning, all three young hawks were back in the park practicing their swooping skills.
You can see this is the funky-tailed individual.
Hawk parents, Amelia and Christo, are always nearby keeping eyes on their kids. Below, the pair watches the fledgling activity from the cross of St Brigid's church.
More to come...
