Nobody lives forever
I just stumbled across this photo of the fence surrounding Downtown Auto at Bowery and Great Jones in my archives. It was taken in February 2011. The garage was recently forced from the Bowery, taking a chunk of history and culture with it.
I always wanted to ask the guys if I could come in and take photos of the place... inside the garage... Never got around to it. As Jeremiah put it, this place might as well as had a target on it...
I've seen a man there in the morning hours doing something on the roof. I think the red van in the yard is his, so if I see him again, I'll ask.
When Art & Industry closed, I noticed the garage was using a few of their plastic mod chairs and that gave me a false sense of hope they were staying a while. I hope they took the chairs with them...and are now in a neighborhood that appreciates their business.
